Violence against women and girls continues unabated in every continent, country and culture. Most societies prohibit such violence — yet the reality is that too often, it is covered up or tacitly condoned. Given that it is estimated that, worldwide, one in three women will become a victim of rape or beaten in her lifetime and that One Billion women violated is an atrocity, V-DAY DRC announces the launch of One Billion Rising Revolution In so doing, V-DAY Congo reached and mobilized a great number of people to express their outrage, to strike, to drum, to act, to dance and to rise against violence against women and girls in their households, families, labor places, churches, etc. We succeeded to reach people who stood in solidarity to denounce and stand against the forms of violence against women and girls. It starts the 5th year of the campaign for Revolution and Change of long existing paradigms. The campaign is announced with the theme: Solidarity to End the Exploitation of Women.

The annual call to action is developed by the team of Global Coordinators - from regions around the world. Solidarity is radical connection. We vow to see you as our brothers and sisters and fight by your side…We join forces and stand together with the millions of people across the planet who are rising to end violence against and girls and resist racist patriarchy. To protect women who are most often the most vulnerable within marginalized communities. We take part in it to honor our mothers whose bodies and beings and blood carved the path we are walking on.

The idea that women gathering en masse to dance in public could help end violence against women and girls is, to me, fairly sketchy. But with countries taking part, and grassroots organisations and activists coming together worldwide this Saturday, is it time to drop the cynicism and join in? When I ask Ensler, the author of The Vagina Monologues , what success for One Billion Rising would look like, she does not equivocate: it is no less than ending violence against women and girls, everywhere and forever. The attraction, she says, is the energy of being part of a global movement. Last year, for instance, there were risings in Bangladesh focused on labour rights in the wake of the Rana Plaza factory collapse, where more than 1, garment workers died; in Hong Kong, thousands joined an event focusing on the plight of domestic workers after a young Indonesian maid, Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, was allegedly abused by her employer. At a time when it can feel as if grassroots activism is often overshadowed by online in-fighting, the emphasis on action, solidarity and community-led events feels refreshing.
